Salicylic acid cleans all dirt, bacteria, and oil from your pores. After applying salicylic acid, you can feel the effect on your skin. Your skin feels clean and so much better.
After washing your face, take a cotton ball and apply salicylic acid. Two times a day is ideal, once in the morning and once at night before bed.
There are different strengths of salicylic acid. There is regular strength for sensitive skin and maximum strength for oily and acne prone skin.

About Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl Peroxide is the strongest acne medication you can get over the counter. For me it has worked great in clearing up my skin.
When you first start using it, you may notice your skin gets dry or starts to peel. Don't freak out, that's normal. If it really bothers you, then just use less and then gradually increase the amount you use after the peeling goes away.
If you have bad skin, it's best to use benzoyl peroxide twice a day. Once in the morning and once at night after washing your face.
Usually after putting on benzoyl peroxide maximum strength, you will notice your acne clearing up in 24 hours.
I buy the generic Benzoyl Peroxide under the name Equate at Wal-Mart and I have tried both the Equate generic version and the name brand of benzoyl peroxide under Clean and Clear and ProActiv and honestly, I prefer the Equate generic benzoyl peroxide. The Clean and Clear brand feels too greasy and I don't like it and I don't like ProActiv's either. Plus, it's the cheapest out there which is a great bonus. It only costs like $2 a tube while the name brand stuff (exact same ingredient) can cost $7 or $8 a tube.

The Best Over the Counter Products For Acne

There are 3 important things you need to make your acne go away and to help prevent acne.
1. A good acne facial cleanser. I personally recommend Clean n Clear Continuous Control Acne Wash which contains benzoyl peroxide.
There are many face washes out there, but get one specifically for acne prone skin.
2. An astringent containing salicylic acid. I buy the Equate brand which is the generic that sells at Wal-Mart. It is half the price of the name brands like Sea Breaze or Clean n Clear with the same active ingredient-salicylic acid. Get the maximum strength too. They come in different strengths.
3. Benzoyl Peroxide. Put this on every night. Wash your face, put on salicylic acid with a cotton ball, then put on benzoyl peroxide. Put it on in the morning too. It dries up acne and may make your skin dry and it can peel at first until your skin gets used to it. If it starts peeling your skin, then simply cut back a little until your skin adjusts.
Stick to the regimen. If you are serious about getting rid of your acne and making it stay away as much as humanly possible, you have to take care of it EVERYDAY and not just sometimes.

Over The Treatment Acne Cures That Work and Why ProActive Doesn't
It's so confusing and overwhelming when you go to the skin care aisle to look for products to treat your acne.
There are so many products, but which ones to choose? It's so hard and frustrating. You can end up wasting a ton of money on products that don't even work.
And what about those kits? They are pretty expensive, but do they work?
Well, as an acne sufferer, I have tried just about EVERYTHING under the sun including prescription medications and the ProActive Solutions kit. I have used Noxema, Clean n Clear, OxyClean, Neutrogena, Biore, and all the generic brands. I have used Retin-A and Differin which are prescription medications. (Retin-A made my skin worse and gave my my first scars. Differin worked great)
So I have found the best of the best. I have found out what REALLY works and I know what doesn't work. So I can save you a lot of time, money, and frustration.
First of all if you have severe acne, stay away from ProActive. I'm sorry to say, but my skin GOT WORSE after I used that. Then when I started reading labels and paying attention, I figured out why. The ingredients in the ProActive products were WEAKER than the ingredients in the over the counter products I was using. Now if you have very mile acne, like only the occasional pimple here and there, it could work for you, but it's overpriced if you have good genes to begin with.
I have decided to gather all the products that work the best, have the strongest OTC ingredients and combine them with my reports on how to prevent acne and herbal treatments for troubled skin (a $27 value free when you buy the kit)
The point is to save YOU the hassle of searching through all the skin care products, the TIME, and the MONEY wasted on kits, subsriptions, and stuff that doesn't work.
And in case you don't want to buy the kit and just want to the buy the products yourself, I will tell you EXACTLY what I recommend so you can get them yourself at any pharmacy, Wal-Mart, K-mart, Walgreens, Rite-Aid, or any store like that.
